Stockert 3T Heater-Cooler System Litigation
The Stockert 3T heater-cooler system is a medical device used during certain cardioplegic operations that stop the heart and blood flow, like cardiac bypass surgeries or transplant surgeries, to regulate the patient’s body temperature. The system uses a closed-water circuit with three separate water tanks to regulate the temperature of bypass machines, heating or cooling blankets, oxygenators, and other medical equipment that keeps the patient’s body at the optimal temperature for such surgical procedures. However, research has shown that patients who undergo open-heart surgery or another cardiopulmonary operation where the Stockert 3T heater-cooler system is used, may be at risk for a nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) infection, like M. chimaera.
In 2015, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning letter about the potential risk of NTM infections from the Stockert 3T heater-cooler system, and in 2016, the agency issued a stronger warning for patients and hospitals using the Stockert 3T system. According to regulators, mycobacteria may grow in the Stockert 3T system’s water tanks, and while this water never actually touches the patient, the bacteria may be spread through the air into the sterile field, including into the patient’s body cavity and onto any implants. As many as 500,000 coronary bypass surgeries are performed every year, and a large percentage of these procedures use the Stockert 3T system. As of late 2016, the controversial heater-cooler system has been linked to at least 32 cases of Mycobacterium chimaera infections, about half of which were fatal.
