Transvaginal Mesh Settlement

Coloplast Corp Reaches $16 Million Settlement to Resolve 400 Vaginal Mesh Lawsuits

Hundreds of surgical mesh lawsuits may be resolved thanks to a recent settlement agreement reached with device maker Coloplast Corp.

Vaginal mesh maker Coloplast Corp. has reportedly reached an agreement to settle product liability lawsuits filed on behalf of women who claim to have suffered debilitating complications after receiving Coloplast’s surgical mesh and bladder sling products. According to reports, the transvaginal mesh settlement calls for Coloplast to pay about $16 million to resolve approximately 400 complaints filed by affected women throughout the country. If you have suffered injuries you believe to be related to mesh, consult a knowledgeable attorney today to discuss your legal options. You may be entitled to reimbursement for your injuries and medical bills, and an experienced surgical mesh lawyer can help you pursue this compensation by filing a product liability lawsuit against the manufacturing company.

Vaginal Mesh Lawsuits Over Injuries

Coloplast Corp. currently faces at least 1,155 vaginal mesh lawsuits pending in the federal court system, where the cases have been centralized before U.S. District Judge Joseph Goodwin in the Southern District of West Virginia as part of a multidistrict litigation (MDL). Judge Goodwin currently presides over more than 50,000 surgical mesh lawsuits filed against various manufacturing companies, including at least 6,172 complaints brought against Bard Avaulta mesh maker C. R. Bard, 13,292 against American Medical Systems (AMS), 12,992 against Ethicon, 7,617 against Boston Scientific, 152 against Cook Medical and 21 against Neomedic. All of the lawsuits raise similar allegations that defects in the design of the surgical mesh products caused women to suffer painful injuries when the mesh eroded through the vagina and led to other internal problems.

Side Effects Linked to Transvaginal Mesh

Vaginal mesh and bladder sling products have become increasingly popular in recent years, and are commonly used for transvaginal repair of pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and stress urinary incontinence (SUI) in women. However, mounting research has identified a host of serious side effects potentially linked to surgical mesh products, including mesh erosion, urinary problems, infection and other serious complications requiring revision surgery. As part of the coordinated pretrial proceedings in the transvaginal mesh litigation, Judge Goodwin has scheduled a series of early “bellwether” trials involving cases brought against C.R. Bard, Boston Scientific, AMS and Ethicon, which are designed to help the parties gauge how juries are likely to respond to certain evidence presented during future surgical mesh trials.

An Experienced Surgical Mesh Attorney Can Help

At least five transvaginal mesh cases have already gone before juries in the United States, with a California state court awarding $5.5 million in damages against C.R. Bard in 2012, and a New Jersey state court awarding $11.1 million in damages against Ethicon in 2013.
