Power Morcellator Manufacturers Facing Uterine Fibroid Surgery Cancer Lawsuits

Two new product liability lawsuits have been filed against the makers of power morcellators, alleging that the devices used during surgery for uterine fibroid removal caused two women to suffer the spread of cancer throughout their bodies. Side Effects of Power Morcellators
Power morcellators are medical devices commonly using during minimally-invasive hysterectomy or uterine fibroid removal procedures, allowing surgeons to cut up the uterus or uterine fibroids and remove them through a small inciscion in the abdomen. The new power morcellation lawsuits were filed in the federal court system on behalf of two women who allege that they may have avoided the spread of cancer if sufficient warnings had been provided by manufacturers about the risk of using power morcellation during a laparoscopic hysterectomy or uterine fibroid removal surgery. One complaint was filed by Lisa Nielsen and her husband, Kurt, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California on October 9, naming Gyrus ACMI as a defendant. On October 10, a wrongful death complaint filed on behalf of Patricia Daley was removed to the federal court system, and the suit alleges that the power morcellators manufactured by Ethicon and Karl Storz used during Daley’s robotic hysterectomy caused the spread of an aggressive form of uterine cancer.
