Ford Escape Vehicles Recalled Due to Sudden Loss of Power Steering
Several recalled models of Ford vehicles have been named in reports of serious car accidents and injuries.
Ford Motor Company has announced a recall of about 1.4 million vehicles for a variety of reasons, including reports of at least 20 car accidents that may have been caused by faulty torque sensors and power steering problems affecting the company’s Ford Escape and Explorer SUVs. The Ford Escape and Explorer recall was issued on May 29, in cooperation with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), following reports of injuries resulting from 15 low-speed accidents linked to a loss of power steering and five wrecks linked to defective torque sensors. Vehicles Affected by Ford Recall
According to the Ford recall announcement, the torque sensor problems may affect about 915,200 Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner models from 2008 to 2011, and about 195,500 Ford Explorers may be affected by a faulty electrical connection causing a loss of power steering during operation. The recalled vehicles were manufactured at Ford’s Kansas City plant, and were primarily distributed to Ford retailers in the United States, Mexico and Canada. In addition to the Escape and Explorer recalls, Ford is also recalling close to 200,000 Taurus models from 2010 to 2014 that were sold in cold-weather areas, due to defective license plate lamp assemblies that may corrode and cause short circuits. To date, Ford has received reports of 18 fires and one injury associated with the license plate lamp assemblies on recalled Taurus vehicles.
