Report Highlights Health Problems Possibly Caused by Tainted Chinese Drywall

The connection between toxic Chinese drywall and homeowners’ health problems has finally been confirmed in a new government report.

According to a recent government report, exposure to contaminated Chinese drywall used in homes throughout the United States over the past ten years has caused numerous health problems for residents. In the report, released by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Diseases Registry on May 2, researchers indicate that Chinese-made drywall imported into the U.S. between five and ten years ago may emit sulfur compounds that can cause serious health problems like fatigue, headaches, respiratory problems, and irritation of the nose, eyes and throat. If you believe you have been adversely affected by side effects of toxic Chinese drywall, our consumer advocates at the Leading Justice can help. Health Risks of Toxic Chinese Drywall

Concerns were first raised about the potential side effects of tainted Chinese drywall in 2008 and 2009, as a growing number of homeowners throughout the country were experiencing corrosion of appliances and foul smells throughout their homes, which was eventually linked to drywall installed in their homes back around 2003. Investigations launched by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicated that the problems homeowners were experiencing were associated with the release of high levels of sulfur compounds used to manufacture certain drywall products in China. These products were imported into the United States during a drywall shortage caused by a housing boom and a series of hurricanes that damaged homes in the southeastern United States, which forced many homeowners to buy cheap drywall manufactured in China.

Although many owners of homes that contained Chinese drywall have complained in recent years that the fumes from the sheetrock caused them to suffer headaches and other health problems, this is the first report to verify the connection. Researchers involved in the report worked with scientists from Georgia Tech, and found that the level of sulfur emitted from tainted Chinese drywall was high enough to cause the health issues homeowners have been complaining about for years. If you have suffered from headaches, or experienced corrosion or foul smells in your home, and you believe toxic Chinese drywall to be the cause, contact a product liability lawyer today to discuss your legal options. You may have grounds to file a lawsuit against the drywall manufacturing company, in order to pursue financial compensation for your losses.
