Liver Damage from Chemical Additive

Triclosan Additive in Antibacterial Soap Linked to Liver Damage in New Study

According to the findings of a new study, consumers using antibacterial soaps, hand sanitizers and other products containing the chemical additive triclosan may have an increased risk of developing cancerous tumors possibly leading to liver disease. In the study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), researchers from the University of California at San Diego analyzed the effects of triclosan exposure in mice over an eight month period, and compared the results to mice that were not exposed to the additive. Where is Triclosan Found?

Triclosan is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial that was first used 20 years ago, and has since become one of the most common additives found in popular consumer products like hand sanitizers, toothpastes, soaps, plastics, detergents and other therapeutics. Researchers involved in this new study found that male mice who were fed a daily dose of triclosan suffered inflammation, scarring of the liver and cancerous tumors, which ultimately led to the development of advanced liver disease. Researchers found that cancerous cells were established in the livers of mice exposed to triclosan, and mice steadily exposed to the additive over time were more likely to develop liver tumors than the mice that were not exposed to triclosan.

Potential Adverse Effects of Triclosan Exposure

Since the use of triclosan has become more widespread, the additive is now considered one of seven compounds most commonly detected in American streams, and is also widely found in the blood, urine and breast milk of American consumers and wild animals as well. In August, serious concerns were raised about the safety of Colgate toothpaste, after a Bloomberg News investigation revealed that the product contained the ingredient triclosan. In 2011, a petition calling for a ban on triclosan was submitted to the EPA, indicating that the chemical additive aids in the development and spread of antibiotic-resistant illnesses, including MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacteria).

In addition to an increased risk of liver damage and liver disease, research has found that the additive triclosan may hinder muscle contractions and reduce muscle strength, and scientists have indicated that triclosan can also reduce heart function by 25% and grip strength by 18% within only 20 minutes of exposure to the chemical.
